Yahya Rahim Safavi on Feb. 21 accused “security terrorists” from the United States of complicity in the bomb attack that killed top Hezbollah operative Imad Mughniyah, media reports said. He also blamed Israel and an unnamed Arab country for the attack.

An assassination attempt targeting Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr was discovered and foiled, according to a statement on Nahrain Net, IraqSlogger reported Feb. 21. Nahrain Net, a pro-al-Sadr site, reported that a source very close to the leadership of al-Sadr’s movement accused “several international parties” of being behind the alleged attempt on al-Sadr’s life and specifically named Israeli, U.S. and British intelligence as possible perpetrators. The attempt on al-Sadr’s life was discovered within the past month as al-Sadr reportedly suffered from a series of illnesses which the source said could have been caused by radioactive materials or poison.

Though Iraqi Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr has ordered a freeze on most of his Mehdi Army’s armed activities, locals are reporting ongoing low-level militia activity, IraqSlogger reported Feb. 21, citing sources in Baghdad. The sources said the militia activities include an internal assassination in Sadr City and a supsected raid targeting pro-U.S. Sunni fighters in northern Baghdad.
